I use mechanical pencils to draw, then I ink over top with very fine marker pens, I like Pilot Fineliners. And I do smaller,finer details with very small 0.5 ball point or liquid ink pens. Making smooth lines just takes practice. Also, I find scanning very large (300 DPI is good) and shrinking the image down makes for smother lines.
